After more than 30 years of pioneering wireless dimming technology for the entertainment industry, RC4 Wireless has joined Moss LED. This is a carefully considered move by Jim and Jeff that gives RC4 the manufacturing resources, operational scale, and long-term stability to keep doing what it does best—only better.
A Win-Win For You & For Us
- Moss taking over manufacturing will allow Jim to focus on development of the next generation of products by streamlining and expediting innovation.
- Jim’s continued leadership ensures the technical DNA of RC4 is protected and extended for generations to come.
- A stronger product pipeline and ‘one-stop-shop’ for LED lighting and controllers backed by Moss LED’s manufacturing resources and Jim’s design vision.
- Greater supply chain control means better pricing and lower additional tariff charges for all customers.
Friday, April 17th is Transition Day

Jim Is Staying
Before we get into any operational details, we want to lead with the thing we know matters most to RC4 customers: Jim Smith, RC4’s founder, is not leaving. Jim is remaining actively involved and will continue in a hands-on role for the next two years, focused on two priorities:
• Overseeing a smooth transition so that your experience as a customer is seamless.
• Designing and developing the next generation of RC4 products—including replacements for the current LumenRadio-based and 900 MHz product lines.
Jim built RC4 from the ground up. From the very first spread-spectrum wireless dimmers for The Phantom of the Opera, to systems trusted by Cirque du Soleil, Disney, WWE, Broadway, the West End, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics—his engineering is the foundation this company stands on. That foundation isn’t going anywhere. Jim’s legacy is this company’s future, and he’s personally committed to making sure the transition strengthens what you already rely on.

Words from Jim:
“We’ve been leading the world of very small, high resolution wireless dimming for over 3 decades,” Jim notes. “RC4 devices are used by Disney, Cirque du Soleil, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, theatre programs in the United States and around the world, and too many motion-picture productions to mention. Our continued strength depends on elevating our core values: making RC4 devices smaller and easier to use while maintaining the outstanding performance and reliability our users depend on every day.”
When asked about product reliability and market performance, Jim has a lot to say. “Both Moss LED and RC4 Wireless are driven by customer satisfaction, product innovation, and compatibility with industry standards, ensuring our products achieve unmatched results in an intuitive and understandable way.
– James David Smith (Jim)
About Moss LED

About RC4 Wireless
Three Decades of Wireless Innovation
RC4 Wireless has been a pioneer in wireless lighting control since 1991. Founded by James David Smith (Jim), the company grew out of years of custom wireless lighting work for some of the largest theatrical productions in the world—including two productions of The Phantom of the Opera.
Operating under Soundsculpture Incorporated, Jim built RC4 from a one-person engineering shop into the industry’s most trusted name in wireless DMX dimming. RC4 was the first company to use digital spread-spectrum radio for theatrical lighting control—a technical breakthrough that changed how productions handle wireless dimming worldwide.
Trusted by the Biggest Names in Entertainment
Over three decades, RC4 products have become essential tools on stages, sets, and arenas across the globe. The customer list is a who’s who of live entertainment: Cirque du Soleil, Disney, WWE, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, the Super Bowl, the Olympics, Feld Entertainment, Madison Square Garden, and countless Broadway and London West End productions.
RC4 systems have powered the iconic chandelier in The Phantom of the Opera, wireless props and costumes in Cirque du Soleil shows worldwide, complex motor control for scrolling signage in Times Square, and wireless motion effects in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.
From The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and The Metropolitan Opera House to Disneyland and touring arenas, RC4 technology is at work 24/7 in the most demanding entertainment environments on the planet.
Award-Winning Innovation
RC4’s engineering excellence has been recognized internationally. The company won back-to-back PLASA London Awards for Innovation in 2014 and 2015—first for the RC4Magic Series 3 and CodeLoader, then for the RC4Magic DMXpix pixel string driver. RC4 also received LDI New Product Honorable Mentions in both years, along with a Best New Lighting Product Award for their Wireless DMX system.
Jim Smith’s Legacy
Jim is an electronics designer and software developer who has spent more than 30 years specializing in battery-powered wireless technology for arts, entertainment, and industry. His work has shaped how the entertainment industry thinks about wireless control—from the original RC3 spread-spectrum innovation through to today’s RC4Magic and RC5 platforms. His name is synonymous with reliability and ingenuity in the wireless dimming space.

Looking Ahead
Aimee will no longer have an active role at RC4 and we thank her for being the cornerstone, and often times, the face of RC4 for so many years. With Aimee no longer involved, the sales and administrative team at Moss will take over order fulfilment, customer service, invoicing, and administrative tasks.
Jim will remain involved for approximately two years and his role focuses on two priorities:
• Ensuring a smooth operational transition for all
customers and partners.
• Leading the development of next-generation RC4
products, including next-generation of the current LumenRadio-based and 900 MHz product lines.
Customers should expect continued innovation and an expanded product pipeline under the combined resources of Moss LED and RC4, working together.
With gratitude, Jim and Jeff thank you for your continued support and trust in our products, solutions and ongoing innovations. We are excited to be building new, forward-thinking products.

“I am extremely excited to bring RC4 under the Moss LED umbrella to ensure its continuity longevity and success. Equally exciting is the opportunity to partner with the brains behind RC4, Jim, and to develop the next generation of wireless LED lighting and control systems. We hope you are equally as excited to start working with the next generation of wireless lighting control. I greatly appreciate your continued trust and support in the products we develop together.”
